The Sterns of Gleicherwiesen, Hildburghausen, Themar, & Coburg

The family of Hirsch (1789-1862) and Fradel/Fanny (née Kahn) Stern of Gleicherwiesen contributed to the Jewish community of Themar. The 1887 marriage of their grandson, Abraham Adolf Stern, 1851-1906, to Hedwig Bär, 1858-1920, daughter of Samuel and Jette Bär of Themar, was the first connection; Hedwig moved to Hildburghausen and she and Abraham had four (4) children. We believe that only one of these children, Hermann, b. 1891, grew to adulthood. (At the moment, we do not know anything about the girl born in January 1890).

The second connection was through the marriage of Hermann Stern to Selma Bär, née Schloss, the widow of Hermann’s cousin Emil Bär. Hermann and Selma married in 1917. Hermann moved to Themar to run the S & J Baer department store on the Market Square. The store soon became known as the “Stern Kaufhaus.”
