The Gutmann Family of Gleicherwiesen

We had always known that two women born Gutmann played a role in the life of the Jewish community of Themar. Sara Gutmann, b. 24 Oct 1826 in Gleicherwiesen, married Mendel Wertheimer in 1849 and moved to Marisfeld and then to Themar. Marianne Gutmann, b. 1824 in Gleicherwiesen, married Löser Lazarus Stern, and moved with him to Hildburghausen. She was the grandmother of Hermann Stern, who married Selma Bär (née Schloss) of Themar. And finally, we knew that Rosette/Sette Gutmann, b. 1832 in Gleicherwiesen, married Marcus Max Stern, the brother of Löser Lazarus Stern.

What we didn’t initially know was whether the three women — Sara, Marianne, and Rosette — were sisters or not. The discovery of “Xeroxes of births and deaths of Jews in the Gleicherwiesen community (typed), 1924, undated” in the archives of the Center for Jewish History in New York (courtesy of, and many thanks to, Gavin Maxwell Rose, who made them available to fellow researchers on geni.com) has brought clarity.

First, we learned that in the early 1800s, there were two distinct branches of the Gutmann family  in Gleicherwiesen: Löser Abraham Gutmann and Selig Abraham Gutmann. Given the presence of ‘Abraham’ in their names, it is likely that they were brothers, and their daughters were first cousins. Then we learned that both men had a daughter named Marianne, both of whom were born in 1924.

That confused but only momentarily. What now seems clear is as follows:
Löser and Klara Gutmann had nine (9) children. The marriage of their daughter Marianne to Löser Lazarus Stern established a close link to Themar.

Selig and Minna (née Friedmann) Gutmann were the parents of the other Marianne. Marianne’s two sisters were Sara and Rosette. Marriane and her husband Simon initially lived in Gleicherwiesen but moved to Memmelsdorf in 1869.

The Family of Selig Abraham and Mink/Minna (née Friedmann) Gutmann

The family of Selig Abraham and Mink/Minna Gutmann is the branch with the most direct connections to the Jewish communities of Marisfeld Themar. Their daughter, Sara, b. 1826 in Gleicherwiesen, moved to Marisfeld upon her marriage to Mendel Emanuel Wertheimer; their third child, and third son, Louis Wertheimer, subsequently moved to Themar and stayed there for the rest of his life.

The map and outline of Selig Abraham and Mink/MinnaGutmann and their three daughters and one son indicate the migration patterns of his children, typical of so many families in rural Germany: the daughters all moved to the villages and towns of their husbands, while the one son, Minkeh/Minklöw remained in Gleicherwiesen. The descendants list identifies four generations of the Selig Abraham and Mink/Minna Gutmann family.
