The family of Max and Meta Frankenberg intersects with the story of the Jewish community of Themar in several ways. Max Frankenberg, b. 1861 in Marisfeld, was the third child of Jacob Moses and Luisa (née Mai) Frankenberg. Like many of the Jewish families of Marisfeld, the children of Jacob and Luisa left Marisfeld for larger urban centres. Max’s sister Hannchen, moved to Mellrichstadt, upon marriage to Lazarus Ottensoser. His other sister, Malwine, b. 1859, moved to Themar in the 1880s with her husband, Nathan Wertheimer, where they formed a family of three children.

It is possible that Max was the first of the family to move to Coburg and we hope to clarify that point soon. We do not yet know exactly what path Max followed between birth in 1861 and 1890. We know that  he and his wife Meta (née Rosenthal) were living in Coburg in 1890; their address was Löwenstrasse 23. Arthur Frankenberg was born in 1891; Else followed six years later.

Malwine and Nathan, and their three children, also moved to Coburg. Nathan Frankenberg, b. 1863, Max’s younger brother, also lived briefly in Coburg. Siegfried, the first child of Nathan and his wife Minna Gassenheimer, was born in Coburg in 1895; the family then moved to Halle/Saale where a second son, Walter, was born in 1897.

Through contributions from a researcher in Coburg and from family members living elsewhere in the world, we are slowing knitting together the story of Max and Meta Frankenberg. At the moment, we are able to present the outline of their family, the parents of Meta Rosenthal and her siblings, and the family of Arthur Levy, who married Edith Wertheimer. We also have a full outline of the family of Jacob and Luisa Frankenberg, Max’s parents, and Nathan Wertheimer (Else Frankenberg’s husband).
