The family of Nathan (Jonas) & Rechla (née Neuberger) Frankenberg was one of the large Jewish families who were key to the Jewish communities of Marisfeld and Themar. Members of the Frankenberg family lived in Themar from the earliest days of Jewish settlement until the last days in the early 1940s.

As well the family outline hints at the pre-Marisfeld history of the Frankenberg family. Nathan Jonas Frankenberg, b. 1770, was born in Wüstensachsen in Hesse; so too was Jacob Samuel WERTHEIMER, b. 1768. Given the intermarriage we see between the Frankenberg and Wertheimer families after they were living in Marisfeld, it seems entirely likely that the same pattern existed in Wüstensachsen. The two men, therefore, may well have been cousins who, in their 30s and possibly newly married, decided to move east — about 65 km. — to Marisfeld to seek economic prosperity. Both men were in Marisfeld and forming families in the first decade of the 19th century.

Once in Marisfeld and later in Themar, the Frankenburg family connected with other key Jewish families, in particular the Wertheimer and Hofmann families, but also the Gassenheimer family of Bibra, and the Sachs family of Berkach.
