We can trace the Schlesinger family back to the late 1700s, when Abraham Schlesinger was born in 1778 in Walldorf an der Werra. Where the family lived before that time is as yet unknown. In 1809, Abraham married Veilchen Lang, b. 1787, in Walldorf a/d Werra, the daughter of Moses and Brendel Lang. Between 1809, when Veilchen was 22 years old, and 1831, Veilchen bore eight (8) children. The last child, born when Veilchen was 44 years old, lived but a day.

Entry in Jewish Register Walldorf for death of Veilchen Schlesinger. This tells us approximate date of birth, date of death and burial, name of her father, and of her spouse Abraham  and his date of death.

It was marriage that brought Schlesinger family members from Walldorf/Werra into the Jewish community of Themar. In 1873, Sofine Schlesinger, b. 24-year-old, Abraham and Veilchen’s granddaughter Sofine, b. 1849, who married, in November 1873, married widower Noah Grünbaum, also born in Walldorf in 1841. Noah had moved to Themar in the late 1860s with his wife Mina (née Friedmann), who died in childbirth in 1872.  In 1876, Noah and Sofine had a son, whom they named Karl after his grandfather Kappel/Karl. In 1904, Karl married Hulda Schlesinger, great-great-grand child of Abraham and Veilchen.

The research of one of Abraham and Veilchen’s g-g-g-g-grandchildren, Garry Meller in Australia, has mapped out the connections among the various branches of the Schlesinger family as well as the Grünbaum family.
