We can trace the roots of the Wertheimer family back to the early 1800s when Jacob Samuel Wertheimer, b. 1768 in Wüstensachsen in Hesse, and his wife, Betti Köhler, b. 1788 in Walldorf in Thüringen, settled in the village of Marisfeld and started a family. Between 1808 and 1822, Jacob and Betti had five children: Mendel, b. 1808, Louis, b. 1809, Sophia, b. 1812; Jonas, b. 1815; and Jette, b. 1822. Jacob died at 84 years in 1852 in Marisfeld, Betti died twenty years later, 83 years old; she may have died in Themar living with one of her adult children in her senior years.
Of the five children of Jacob and Betti Wertheimer, we know most about the family of two sons: Mendel, b. 1808, and Jonas, b. 1815. Mendel Wertheimer and his wife Sara, née Gutmann, married in 1849 and had eight (8) children, starting with the birth of Selig in 1850 and ending with the birth of twins, Albert and Leopold, in 1866. Only one of the children was female, Minnie, b. 1862. Jonas, b. 1815, and his wife, Mathilde née Frankenberg, b. 1818, married in 1855, and had three children, only two of whom lived to adulthood.
Below is the Descendants List of approximately 176 members of the family of Jacob Samuel and Betti (née Köhler) Wertheimer. For the stories of several of their children, see:

- NOTES:
Auschwitz Concentration Camp form for Erich Wertheimer, 01 1944. Arolsen Archives. 1. The information about the fate of Erich Wertheimer, 1893, is confusing. The German National Archives Memorial Book states that he was deported to Gross Rosen KZ and then murdered in February 1945 in Buchenwald. This document, in the Arolsen Archives, indicates that he was arrested on 03 Sep 1942 in Amsterdam (blue arrow). On 01 Apr 1944 (red arrow), this document records he entered Auschwitz as a forced labourer. Where he was between those two dates is not yet known. And is it possible that Erich was sent on a death march upon the Russian liberation of Auschwitz on 27 January 1945 and went to Gross-Rosen and in early February 1945 on to Buchenwald.
2. The story of Alice Glaser, née Wertheimer, is told in this text accompanying the laying of a Stolperstein in her remembrance in Chemnitz in 2019.
- 3. The story of Rosalie Wertheimer, née Lindenfeld, is difficult to piece together. Post-war records in Arolsen Archives that trace the search by Rosalie’s sister-in-law Helene Wertheimer, née Lamm, to locate Rosalie. The records indicate that Rosalie was deported to Theresienstadt Ghetto in 1943, survived the war and the Holocaust and was taken to the Deggendorf DP camp at the end of war. Another record identifies her application to leave Germany and immigrate into Argentina.
