Lieber Willi!
Auch viele Grüsse von mir. Wir sandten Dir vor etwa 14 Tagen einen Brief und 3 Tage später einen Umschlag. Bestätige uns bitte diesen nach Erhalt. Hast Du Deine Uhr erhalten? Sie war nicht im Pfundpäckchen, sondern in einem Paket mit Valutaerklärung. Dieses Paket enthielt u. a. die etwas abgeschabte u. gut reparierte Knickerb[ocker]hose zu Deinem klein-braun-karierten Werktagsanzug, ein Hemd u. 1 P. Strümpfe. Gib uns im nächsten Brief an, ob das Paket doch noch ankam. Der Verlust Deiner Uhr wäre höchst bedauerlich. Wir würden Dir in diesem Fall eine andere besorgen, leider werden aber angeblich keine Pakete ins Ausland befördert, wahrscheinlich auch keine Päckchen mehr. Es gibt auch keine Antwortscheine mehr. Deshalb sei mit allem, mit jedem Pfennig sparsam. Wie gern würden wir Dir und Meinhold so viel als möglich senden, bevor wir ganz mittellos sind, aber es geht nicht mehr. Es kommen fortwährend neue Verfügungen. Du glaubst nicht, wie die deutschen Juden sehnsüchtig, wenn auch mittellos, nach Auswanderung lechzen alle sind darin machtlos. Über alle Gesetze kann ich nicht schreiben. Herbert u. Flora bemühen sich zur Einwanderung nach Trinidad oder Guatemala, da ihnen die Einwanderung nach USA zu lange dauert. Aber es ist nichts zu machen. Wir Juden sehen mit gross. Sorge in die Zukunft. Auf Deine Frage teile ich Dir mit, dass wir noch keinen Brief von Dir geöffnet fanden.
Heute abend meldete d. Radio Zusammenstösse zwischen Haifa u. Jerusalem
zwisch. englischem Militär u. Arabern. Habt Ihr etwas davon gehört? Sonst weiss ich nichts
neues mehr. Vorgestern hab[en] wir oft an D. Geburtstag [den 29 Dezember 1922] gedacht. Jedenfalls ist er sang- & klanglos verlaufen. Liebe Grüsse Dein Papa

We received your letter from the 18th of Dec. Everything (Correspondence) seems to be arriving in chronological order, nothing has gone missing, nor been opened. If you received (our letter/s) please confirm. Last [?] we were at the Müllers [Max Müller, born 1873, and his wife Frieda, née Freudenberg] for A Visit[Coffee] to celebrate the engagement of Maxl [Max Steidler] with Martha [Müller, daughter Max & Frieda] Both have been provided with foreign currency by English relatives. Our guarantee documents still have not arrived…I’m not even sure if they have already been sent.
Last week I was in Hersfeld packing Omi’s [Bertha Stern Nussbaum] belongings to make sure everything arrives in an orderly fashion when she moves into her old age home. Due to the heavy snowfall and Christmas traffic the trains had severe delays. The Speiers from Rothenburg now reside in Hersfeld [am Hanfsack] as they no longer have that much furniture. Bertha [Nussbaum, née Oppenhaum] is returning from Hospital today and together they want to rent an apartment in Frankfurt. The house in Hersfeld will be sold as we are being (somewhat)pressured to do so. Siegfried [Nussbaum, son of Bertha] has now been married for several weeks and will be emigrating soon. Where the Hersfeld Synagogue once stood is now an empty square…Rosengartens are still there…They want to register Erich with the Kinder & Jugend Alijah. I am so sorry that I am unable to send you an “Antwortschein” Yesterday I heard (and I am hoping it isn’t true) that it will no longer be possible to send packages weighing a pound. noch hier habendes Hemd u. ein biszchen Schokolade eingepackt. Wenn Du das Hemd jetzt nicht brauchst, hebe es Dir für später auf, da ich Dir dann nichts mehr geben kann. Hat Eure Chanukafeier geklappt? Da der l. Hello From me as well! We sent you a letter 14 days ago, and an envelope 3 days later. Please let us know if you have received these. Did you get your watch? We didn’t send it with one of regular packages, but in a package with a declared value. That package contained your well used, but repaired, Knickerbocker pants for your brown small checkered daily suit, a shirt as well as a pair of socks. Do let us know in your next correspondence if it arrived. The loss of the watch in particular would be a shame. We would source a replacement but apparently packages are no longer being shipped abroad, and there are no more “Antwortscheine” Please be careful with any and all expenditures. We would love to send you and Meinhold as much as possible while we have anything left, but it is no longer possible. New laws and decrees are continuously being passed. You have no idea how badly every German Jew is desperately wanting, wishing, trying to emigrate but we are all absolutely powerless. I am unable to go into specific in respect to the laws. Herbert and Flora are attempting to emigrate to Trinidad or Guatemala, as the process of emigrating to the USA is to lenghty, but it seems impossible (futile) As Jews we look to the future with much concern…To answer your question, to date no letter from you has been opened.
The radio this evening reported clashes between the british Military and Arabs in the areas between Haifa and Jerusalem. Have you heard of this? Otherwise I have heard nothing more. The day before we often thought of D.’s Birthday
I quickly packed a shirt of yours we still have here and some chocolate. If you don’t need the shirt for now, keep it for later as I will no longer be able to give/send you anything.
